SmartStart is based on several child development models which incorporates traditional learning methods along with theories of Montessori, Reggio-Emilia, and others. Learning through play is viewed as the cornerstone of the curriculum. Adults provide protection, security, stimulation, limits, and affection. Children are given the opportunity to explore materials and participate in a variety of experiences. Activities are carefully planned and implemented in an open classroom setting. Children are free to choose from age-appropriate activities including art, music, language development, pre-math skills, science and nature, and dramatic play. Children develop self-esteem, independence, and problem-solving skills as they make choices and assist in planning the environment and the activities. SmartStart’s curriculum also includes STEM activities, language and arts, jazz dance, yoga and French.
SmartStart successfully combines play-based teaching strategies with highly academic, developmentally appropriate activities. Since most of the SmartStart kiddos graduate into the public school system, SmartStart prepares them for kindergarten while offering a developmentally-appropriate curriculum that integrates the traditional learning system along with the more forward-thinking early education approaches such as Reggio-Emilia and Montessori. This combination approach focuses on social-emotional, physical and cognitive development and helps kids "hit the ground running" as soon as they enter Kindergarten.
